Review: Inspector Ian Rutledge returns to London still fighting his own demons. Scotland Yard is on an all out manhunt for a Ripper copycat. In order to get the glory for himself, Bowles sends Rutledge out on the case in Cornwall to keep Rutledge out of the way in London. When Rutledge arrives to Cornwall, the case seems pretty straight forward. A double suicide and an accident. What really shocks him is that one of the suicides happens to be the author of the poems that got him through the war. As he makes more inquiry's, Rutledge discovers there is more to this case than meets the eye. Will the town recover from the revelations made and will Rutledge ruin the one person that helped get him through the horrible war?

This was a more emotional book that I had anticipated. I was able to connect to the characters as a large part of the book dwells on people returning and changing from war. Although I myself have not been to war, I am a military spouse and have sent my husband to war. There are changes that people go through and I felt that Todd really captured those feelings. Another big part of the book was how appearances (especially in the family) are deceiving and how families deal with their secrets. I couldn't put the book down as it completely captivated me. The characters are beautifully written and very much believable. I cannot wait to get the next book in the series. A must read.

Review: When his former professor and guardian asks for his help, Sugawara Akitada feels obligated to assist him in his investigation. To do this, Akitada must return to his former university and it reminds him of things he would rather forget. Not long after he begins teaching at the university, Akitada stumbles upon not one but three murders he hopes to solve. He is not alone. His servant, Tora is there to help with his investigation. Not only does Akitada have the task of solving three murders and protecting a young prince, he also has to deal with the most troublesome thing of all... a matter of the heart.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. Out of sure luck I picked this up at the library due to my fascination with the Japanese culture. Not only was this an enjoyable read on the history and culture of eleventh-century Japan, but it was a fantastic mystery. Once I started reading, I could not put the book down. Parker created a wide variety of vivid characters. The plot was also fast paced and not drawn out. Overall, this was a fantastic mystery that both historical fiction and mystery fans will enjoy.

As a side note, I discovered that I.J. Parker is a local author here in Virginia Beach.

Review: Inspector Ian Rutledge returned from the war a broken man with a broken heart. All he wants to do is try to do his job and silence the ever-present voice in his head. One of his rivals in Scotland Yard is hoping he will fail and sends him off to Warwickshire to solve the murder of a popular colonel. The suspect is none other than an honored war hero who is friend to royalty. Rutledge tries to remember his skill at investigation but years of war have sapped him of that skill. With secrets revealed and political pressure, will it be too much for Rutledge or will he return to London with his wits intact?

A great opening for a very promising series. I instantly liked the character of Rutledge and found Hamish to be a witty commentator. The characters were well written and full of life. The mystery was fantastic and was pleasantly surprised that I could not figure it out right away. So many mysteries today are too obvious. I can't wait to read more from Todd and learn more about Ian Rutledge. A fantastic historical mystery that is a must read.

Review: We all know the story of the Land of Oz... or do we? This is an alternate version of the classic tale by Frank L. Baum. We follow the life of Elphaba, later known as the Wicked Witch of the West. From her birth all the way to the classic melting death scene, we follow Elphaba on the journey of her life and try to determine if she really was "wicked".

This is most definitely not the "Oz" I remember. Maguire sets the story on its side with this new version of events. I was interested to see where he was going to go with the Witch's side of the story. The one word that comes to mind when I try to describe the story is disturbed. It was dark and not at all what I had envisioned. We encounter the dismal land of Oz on the brink of dictatorship and left with those following an obscure religion. Then we are introduced to Elphaba who is born to a loose mother who isn't sure who the father is for two of her three children. Elphaba was left to her own devices and also paraded as a sign that her "father" was cursed for not saving the souls of his town. The only bright moment of her life is her brief affair with Fiyero who shows her she is indeed capable of love. All the way to the end I couldn't help but feel for Elphaba and her bad life. I am morbidly curious as to how the series will progress so I will check out the second book, Son of a Witch. All in all, an interesting fantasy novel not for the light of heart.

Review: Lavinia Lake's business is being destroy by Tobias March. He claims she is in danger, but she thinks he is up to something. After much urging (breaking all of her merchandise) she agrees to pack a bag and leave town. Once back in England, Lavinia needs to think of a new career to support her and her niece. Her new career, a private inquiry agent, forces her to renew her acquaintance with Tobias March. They are both on the trail of a murderer which leads them into danger and more.

A fun read right from the start. I really enjoyed reading all of the banter between Lavinia and Tobias. The characters were written well and had spirit. This was a great introduction to the two characters who are part of a trilogy (so far). I look forward to reading the continuing tales of Lake & March.

Review: Thomas Hyde does not like that Esmeralda, the latest spiritualist/charlatan in society, is using his mother for her personal gain. He needs to discover what she is planning and who she is working for. Emmaline/Esmeralda is doing what she must to seek the revenge against the one who wronged her the most. When Thomas confronts Emmaline/Esmeralda sparks fly and he will learn the answers to his questions and lose his heart.

This was a dark, shocking book. The premise was interesting, but the story itself is much more dark and disturbing. There really wasn't much romance, but just disturbing sexual situations. There really didn't seem to be much chemistry between the characters either. The plot was too thin and felt just like filler in between sex scenes. I was not impressed with this story and do not recommend this book.

Review: Ian Sutcombe needs a wife... a rich wife. He is in such dire straits that he is willing to oeverlook his pride to marry below his station as long as his future wife comes with a large sum of money. Hannah Leeds is lonely and thinks she is in love. After she is cruelly disappointed, her father arranges a mariage for her. Ian must choose between three heiresses to secure his position in society. After two horrible meetings, he had begun to lose hope. When Ian and Hannah meet it doesn't take long for them to come to an agreement. Before the wedding Ian busys himself with rebuilding the family homes. Hannah is fascianted by her soon to be husband and begins to long for him as she slowly comes out of the fog she is in. After marriage, the two become closer and Hannah soon realizes she loves her husband. Her happiness is short lived as someone from her past suddenly reappers into her life and might ruin her chance for true love.

This was a sweet story, but it lacked a real emotion. It seemed to take forever to even get to the wedding and the rest of the story. Too much time was spent on the time before they married, than on the marriage itself. Once the characters are together, they didn't seem to have much chemistry. It was hard to imagine that they actually did love each other as little time was spent on the time they were together. All in all a slow read that has very little emotion.

Review: A somewhat interesting view of the Norse myths used in this series. We join the main characters of this series as they are all in the midst of a great battle. The story was somewhat difficult to follow as the majority of the scenes were battle scenes. It didn't seem like enough story was being told and I was left craving more story. It wasn't until the last few volumes that we started to get some back story which starting to make it interesting. Unfortunately, the series was never finished, so we were all left hanging as to what happens in the land of Midgard.

Review: Beatrice Poole needs an authority on the Forbidden Rings, which leads her right to Leo Drake, Earl of Monkcrest. From the start, Leo knows he has never met any woman quite like Beatrice and he is most intrigued. Together they return to London to investigate the mystery of Beatrice's Uncle Reggie demise and the whereabouts of the Forbidden Rings. What they find is danger and quite possibly a love that will last forever.

I had a difficult time getting into this story. It just seemed to be to similar to other stories by Quick. Even though it was somewhat slow at parts, I did enjoy the adventures of Leo and Beatrice. All in all, a decent story if somewhat slow.

Review: Louisa Bryce has a secret that no one can know. When she meets up with Anthony Stalbridge, she is in the midst of an investigation to one of London's most popular gentleman. The two meet in a most interesting way. They are caught in a place where they are not to be and to help each other, they kiss. From that moment on they become partners in an investigation that will change their lives forever.

A somewhat dark, but nonetheless enjoyable story. The characters were great and really fleshed out. I enjoyed the mystery that threw Louisa and Anthony together. The side characters were interesting as well. A most enjoyable story that fans a those new to Quick will enjoy.

Review: Lady Emily Ashton is at the country home of a man she loathes all for her friend Ivy. Emily bears the taunting of Lord Fortescue and the arrival of someone unexpected... her fiance's former lover, the very sophisticated Kristiana von Lange. As if that was not enough to deal with, Lord Fortescue has the bad manners of being found shot dead. Unfortunately, the prime suspect of the crime is none other than Robert Brandon, her friend Ivy's husband. Determined to discover the truth and save Robert at all costs, Emily embarks on a dangerous journey where secrets are revealed and decisions have to be made.

Alexander has now hooked me into this series completely. It is most interesting to see a society lady as an investigator. Lady Ashton seems to always find herself in the middle of the most interesting and dangerous mysteries. This book, we see a more emotional side to Emily, which really makes her come alive off the page. Another great historical mystery by Alexander. A must read. I can't wait until the next installment comes out in September 2009, Pearl Tears.

Review: We join Lady Emily Ashton in the midst another one of London's social seasons. This season the ton is obsessed with the possible heir to the French throne. He is the envy of every hostess and mother trying to get her daughter married off. The season is not very promising for Emily as she is the butt of many rumors. When one of the few people that she socializes ends up dead after she suggested police involvement with a theft, Emily is determined to find out exactly what is going on, even if her own life is at stake.

Alexander really fleshed out the characters much more in this second installment of the Lady Emily Ashton series. I found it to be much more readable and a delight. Lady Ashton is an interesting character that finds herself in the most interesting of mysteries. While the notions and speech of a few characters seem somewhat out of place, this is a great historical novel set in the restrictive Victorian era. I was very pleased with this installment and cannot wait to read the next.

Review: Harry Fleming, the Earl of Graystone is keeping his eye on Augusta Ballinger as his future bride. Although somewhat impetuous, she is steadfast and loyal, unlike his first wife. Getting Augusta to agree to his plan of marriage is not going quite as easily as Harry hoped. Also, he is having a most difficult time keeping up with all of Augusta's intrigues and keeping her safe. Harry finally gets Augusta safely wed, but now it appears she may hold the missing information to a clue to discovering the identity of a man who alluded him during the war.

This was not one of Quick's best books. The characters were interesting, but somewhat repetitive. There were a few things (Harry's need of a virtuous wife and Augusta being the last of the reckless Northumberland Ballingers) characters repeated a bit too much where it started to become tedious. The story was not bad, just not as good as some of Quick's others. All in all, a forgettable book that you could pass over.

Review: Emily finally gets to meet the man of her dreams who she just happened to be corresponding with. Naturally, he is handsome and well-mannered. Not long after he comes into her life, Emily discovers Simon's real intention. He has come for vengeance on her family and to reclaim his family home, which was won by Emily's father in a card game 20 years ago. His plan is to seduce her and force her father to give him his home back. Although hurt, Emily decides to make a deal with Simon... a deal that will change their lives forever.

From the start I absolutely disliked Simon. Not only is he cold, but he treats Emily horridly. Emily was just as annoying with her talk of a metaphysical relationship and her lack of intelligence. I kept reading hoping there would be a change for the better, but it never did. The characters were ubelieveable and not well written. This is one of Quick's works that you could pass over.

Review: On her way home Lucy literally stumbles over a body... Simon's body. Although not dead, Simon was very badly injured. Lucy brought Simon to her home and cared for him. While at this modest home, Simon began to fall for Lucy. After a failed attempt on his life, Simon realizes that if he stays Lucy will be in danger. It appears that he really cannot live without Lucy so he returns to her and brings her back to London with him to be his wife. Lucy discovers Simon's secret war... a war that threatens to tear them apart.

This was a very emotional story. Hoyt created characters with deep feelings that you couldn't help feel for. Once you start reading this book you will not want to put it down. A must read for historical romance fans.

Review: Harriet has a problem... someone has found her caves and is using them as a warehouse. Her simple solution is to contact Viscount St. Justin to take care of the problem as they caves are actually his property. What she didn't count on is the Beast of Blackthorne Hall coming to the neighborhood. Once Harriet discovers the history behind Gideon, she is not quite sure she made the right decision to bring him back. In the process of discovering the thieves hiding their bounty in the caves, Gideon and Harriet end up having to stay the night in the caves and become engaged the next day. Gideon does the honorable thing and engages himself to Harriet. Will Gideon actually go through with the wedding (his last engagement was terminated by him) or will Harriet be ruined forever?

An interesting story right from the start. The characters were well written and you really felt for them. As usual, Quick gave us a most interesting story with humorous antics thrown in the mix. I really did like this pair and was on the edge of my seat turning the pages to see what would happen. This is one of Quick's better works. A must read for Amanda Quick or historical romance fans.

She seems to be the only one who can handle Edward's nasty temper. Edward has just returned to his ancestral home and is in the process of finding a bride so he can restart his family line. There is just one problem with his master plan... he is falling for his audacious secretary Anna. After many misadventures and miscommunication, will Anne and Edward overcome the odds to stay together?

A very engaging story right from the start. The banter between Anna and Edward was fun to read. Hoyt's characters felt real and one can't help feeling for them. There were many different emotional currents running throughout this book and they never stopped until the end. As with her other books, some of the language is a bit too modern, but overall a great historical novel.

Review: We join Anita at the start of her involvement with the police as a consultant. The first case is not easy for her and emotions run high. There is a serial killer on the loose and all the evidence points to a vampire. The evidence leads the police and Anita to Guilty Pleasures, a vampire strip club. We witness the first meeting between Jean-Claude and Anita. Jean-Claude is intrigued by Anita, but she is less than thrilled. The investigation leads to more danger that marks Anita for life.

The story was good, but it felt sort of rushed. I think I would have enjoyed it more if there was more to the story. It was interesting to see the origins and first meetings of the main characters of this series. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had already read the series by Hamilton. I did like the artwork. The characters are brought to vivid life on the pages. I especially like the cover art that includes the characters from the Marvel Zombies series. The second part of the book is a huge guide to Guilty Pleasures. I found the guide to be more interesting than the story itself. On the whole, this prequel is geared more for the fans of the series and not really a must read for the casual reader.

Review: Lord Vale has lost another prospective bride... his second in six months. One of the guests at the wedding has boldly come forward and actually proposed marriage to him. He needed a bride and she was a lady, so they were wed. Melisande happened to be in love with Jasper but due to her past, wanted to guard her heart and keep that hidden from him. Through their playful banter they learned more about each other. Jasper discovered that his prim and proper wife was a wanton at night. They each had their secrets and strove to keep them hidden or risk losing each other.

I was hooked from the start. The characters were well written and I enjoyed the playful banter between Lord and Lady Vale. Hoyt was able to keep the story going and also show some playful and emotional scenes between Jasper and Melisande. I did feel that some of the dialogue was too modern, but overall found this to be a great story.

Review: Lady Ashton is in morning after losing her husband to illness on a hunt in Africa. She hardly knew her husband as they were only married for a matter of months before he left on his final expedition to Africa. As time goes on, Emily learns more and more about her husband and his love of all things Greek. She herself becomes quite the scholar and delves deep into the subject. As she does this, she learns more and more about her husband and eventually falls in love with him. Meanwhile, she has two of his friends, Colin Hardgreaves and Andrew Palmer are both after her affections. The more she learns about Philip (her husband), she discovers a mystery involving stolen antiquities and the British Museum. She lands herself in danger that can only result in scandal.

I was intrigued with the writing style of Alexander from the beginning. She makes it easy to keep turning the pages to read more. The characters were well written although somewhat unbelievable for the era (a bit too modern at times). For the most part the story was interesting and captured my attention; however, it lagged somewhat in the beginning. I also could have done without the mystery of Philip's demise (is he dead or not). All in all, a nice mystery with some spunky ladies and a slight hint of romance in the air. I will continue on with her second book, A Poisoned Season.

Years later, Nick is still in search of his father's ring and by chance or destiny meets Fiona at an inn where he was to meet the man that stole his ring. Sparks fly between the two but that is short lived as a group of men is after them. In order to keep Fiona safe, Nick takes her home as his ward and tries to solve the mystery of who is after him.

From the start, this book just keeps the action going. There are murders, thefts, vacations, and of course romance. The characters were great. Although, towards the end the Duke was somewhat unbelievable. He said things that were somewhat out of character, but lovely things any woman would die to hear. I couldn't put this down and I just had to know what happened. Even though it is a lengthy book, it went by so fast and was over before I knew it. Even though this is a holiday book, you can enjoy it any time of the year. A must read.

Review: Rafe Bowman has to marry an nice aristocratic English woman or be cut off forever by his demanding father. A wife has been found and it is the Christmas season. All of the Wallflowers get together at Stony Cross for a most memorable Christmas. In order for Rafe to appear worthy of Natalie, the Wallflowers invite her companion, Hannah to find out what she is like. As soon as Rafe sets his eyes on Hannah, sparks fly.

It was nice to revisit the Wallflowers one more time. Even though it is a light and quick read, there is much to enjoy about this book. I enjoyed the banter between Rafe and Hannah. They were both characters I grew to love. Even if you have never read any of the other books, you will enjoy this holiday read.

Review: From the start we are given an elegant view into the lives of women during seventeenth-century China. Peony is from a noble family and is kept hidden from the world around her. She is educated and very emotional, which worries her mother. Her mother wants her to become a good wife, but all Peony can think of is that she is being handed over to a strange family through marriage. For her sixteenth birthday, Peony's father puts on a production of the opera, The Peony Pavilion, which changes her life forever. We then follow Peony on the journey through her young death, and extensive afterlife and she how she and others change in the afterlife.

The world that Lisa See created was beautiful. Through her writing, we are transported to another time and place. See most definitely did her research and it shows. However, I still found the novel predictable and lagging at times. I also found some of the choices that Peony made to be strange, but I admit that may be a cultural difference. Overall, this is a good novel that was well written.

Review: This story begins just after the ending of Mine Till Midnight. Win has left for the clinic to make herself better and Kev is utterly devastated to be without her. Time warp forward two years and Win returns healthy (for the most part) and anxious to hear about Kev who was silent during those years. Kev has turned hard without Win, but when he sees her the old feelings come back. Naturally, there is another love interest involved as Win is a beauty. Secrets are finally told and much drama ensues.

Will they - won't they? That sums up the majority of this book. We learn a bit more about the history between Win and Kev and why there are all of those smoldering looks. Kev wants Win but doesn't think the is good enough for her. However, he has issues with anyone else wanting her. We are left to sift through hundreds of pages in order to find out if they will finally get over it and get together. Once nice thing about this book is that we finally learn some long awaited answers to burning questions began in earlier books. I didn't enjoy it as much as Midnight, but I still enjoy this series and can't wait for the third book.

However, she doesn't want Gabriel to know who she is as her family was involved in his financial ruin. Gabriel is entranced by this mysterious lady, but when he finally discovers who she is, he begins to plan revenge. After being in Phoebe's compay, his plans for revenge begin to change to more permanent ones.

While the story is something that interests me and I usually like the heroins from Quick's novels, I just did not like Phoebe. I did enjoy the dry humor of Gabriel's character, but it was not enough to save this novel. The plot was somewhat thin and the fact that the main character was unable to use reason was more than annoying. Not one of Quick's better stories.

Review: This tale begins with a supposed Chinese monk disrupting a wedding... his own. Jacob Cato was left for dead in China and has now returned on the day that was to be his wedding. The girl he was to marry is in the process of getting married to his cousin. He effectively stops the ceremony, but for what purpose. As events draw out, it becomes clear that Jacob is interested in what was to be his future bride, but not in being the earl. There is an obvious attraction between Jacob and Evelyn, but they have their differences. These differences almost cost them everything.

The premise of the story was interesting, but it just seemed to lack something. I really was not induced to read the characters and really didn't care for them much. I just finished the story to find out what happens at the end. The ending was almost too abrupt and many loose ties tied up. A pretty forgettable read.

Review: The start of this book is intertwined with the previous book, To Rescue A Rogue. We begin at the engagement ball for Dare and Lady Mara. We follow Dare's sister Thea as she is attempting to change gowns due to an unfortunate incident with a glass of wine. Thea meets a most interesting man in the hall... a man who blackmails her to announce an engagement or he will refuse to aid her brother. Being the good sister that she is (and also enjoying the kisses of this stranger) she reluctantly agrees. After getting to know Lord Darien, she begins to see that there is more to him and begins to truly have feelings for him. However, there are many things that get in their way. She has a rather loose cousin and there is all the bad history of the Cave family that gets in their way. With a shaky start, this is one love that strives to survive.

I began this story with high hopes that perhaps I should not have had. A good chunk of this book takes place during the previous book, To Rescue A Rogue. We see some of the same things happen, but from a different perspective. I really didn't care much for the character of Thea. I found her to be a spoiled little miss for a chunk of the book. While Darien was somewhat a cad, he really did have good intentions and I have to say that I liked him. I think there is just too much extra drama packed into these (Rogue series) books that is unnecessary. It just feels to me like Beverley is trying to add pages to her book.

Review: The story begins with Lady Mara wandering the streets of London trying to reach her sister's London home without getting caught. Did I mention that she is also only in her corset and wrapped in a blanket? Somehow, she manages to find her brother's best friend's home, but alas, he is not home. After a few moments of Terror, Dare arrives home and saves her. Lady Mara has known Dare for some time, but now she is grown and not the adventurous child she used to be. Even though he is recovering from wounds suffered in Waterloo (and opium addiction), Dare cannot resist helping Lady Mara. In return she tries to help Dare. By planning little outings, she learns more about the man Dare has become and falls in love with him. Dare can't help himself and has also fallen for Lady Mara, but he doesn't feel worthy of her due to his addiction. However, he can't let her fall into some other man's hands so he proposes to her with a condition... he has to be free of the Opium. Other outside forces collide with this couple and they fight for their love to survive.

This is one of the last books in Beverley's Rogue series. The great thing about them is that you can read them apart and still figure out what is going on. I really liked the characters of Lady Mara and Dare and cheered them on throughout the book. The book did start to lag in the middle and there did seem to be a lot of extra drama thrown in that really didn't need to be there. It almost felt like Beverley was trying to make the book at least 400 pages so she had to throw in some extra drama to fill it up. Overall, it was a good story and I did enjoy reading it.

Review: The story begins with Evelyn and Nathan living very separate lives... Nathan living in their country estate and Evelyn in London in high society. Evelyn is currently a companion to one of the royal princesses and contemplating having an affair of her own. When Nathan gets word that Evelyn is up to her eyeballs in one of the most outrageous scandals for some time, he decided enough is enough and comes back to take her to their country home. Naturally, she tries to avoid by going all the way to the king himself. However, nothing stops Nathan and she is returned to their home. They have been separated for three years and are virtually strangers, but with much difficult history between them. Nathan wants his wife back and Evelyn continues to struggle for some time to come to terms with their past and move on. When strange things start happening, Nathan begins to worry about Evelyn's safety. After a few attempts on her life and their meddling parents, the two are thrown together and attempt to start their lives over.

This was a difficult book for me to finish. I really liked the character of Nathan, but I could have thrown Evelyn across the room... several times. For the majority of the book she tries hard to reject her husband and not even try to work things out with him. Not until the end does she grow up and begin to discover that he really is a great guy and she should cut him some slack. Yes, they have had tragedy in their lives, but I think she was overreacting greatly. If I were Nathan, I think I would have dumped her long before he gave up on her. The overall story was okay, but it is a book that you can live without reading.

Review: The story begins now long after the end of the previous book, Silent in the Grave. Lady Julia has been recovering from her ordeal in Italy with two of her brothers. There she has a love interest, a young Italian count. After receiving a summons from their father for Christmas, the siblings pack it up, along with Alessandro (the Italian count) and head home to England. At first, it was a nice gathering of family and friends. Brisbane was even there but he was not alone... he brought his fiance. Lady Julia was set back by this, but soon realizes there is more to meets the eye. With this motley crew all assembled, there is of course a crime to solve and a snowstorm that will ensure no one will escape. This situation causes Lady Julia and Brisbane to work together once more, and the sparks fly.

Admittedly, the book did have a slow start. However, once events went into motion I could not put the book down. Raybourn crafts such a great assortment of characters with a great mystery. I especially love trying to reason out who the culprits could be along with Lady Julia. Lady Julia's character has grown more sure of herself in this book and is really becoming a force to be reckoned with. I also enjoy the sparks that fly between Lady Julia and Brisbane. I am desperate for the next installment of this series, Silent on the Moor. A must read for both historical fiction and mystery fans.

Review: The novel opens with a house party at the Grey's London home. Sir Edward Grey begins to convulse on the floor and shortly after, dies. Lady Julia is faced with the death of her husband and the questions of Nicholas Brisbane. Brisbane believes there has been foul play, but Julia is convinced that it was just a natural death. After a year passes, Lady Julia begins to discover more about her husband and comes to believe that there may be more to her husband's death. She enlists the assistance of Brisbane and enters a deadly game of cat and mouse.

From the very first paragraph I was intrigued with this story. The writing was fantastic and it was obvious that Raybourn did much research. You felt with every page that you were in Victorian London following Lady Julia trying to discover the truth. This novel will appeal to both historical fiction and mystery fans alike. A must read.

Review: This biography goes over much of Borchert's interesting library career. He tells stories of his experience in the inner-city library. For the most part, I was bored with his narrative. I work at a public library and much of what he describes happens all over the country. I guess you could say it is just part of the whole job experience. I'm not saying that it should be fine to have a drug deal go down in your bathroom at work, but that is sadly happening everywhere. I like to regale my stories from when I used to work at Borders and now at the library. My friends have a hard time believing it can be happening. That said, I think this book was dry and to be honest it was difficult to finish. I mistakenly thought it was to be humorous, but I barely even cracked a smile. I will give him that it was a great way to get the public aware of what it is we as library workers have to face on a daily basis.

Review: Jack and Allie did not get off to a great start. They both thought the worse of the other, keeping to stereotypes. They both had their fair share of pride, which seemed to get in their way quite often. Then there was the orphan that tied them together. Not long after their association, it became obvious that there was an attraction. They both tried to stay away from each other, but in the end they just had to be together. As the second book in this trilogy, it picked up where the last left off. We now get a closer look at Jack. The plot of this particular tale is somewhat ludicrous. In an attempt to locate his sister, Jack opens of a gaming club to possibly have an encounter with her. Once Allie and Harriet arrive he seems to forget about this search and gets involved in their issues and his growing lust for her. It seems the Endicott boys only seem to look for their sister when they need to hide or fulfill some other thing lacking in their lives. For the most part it was an average story, but one that you could skip.

To escape them, he takes off for his family estate and then decides to look into the disappearance of his half sister. This journey takes him right to Nell's door. It is obvious they are attracted to each other and events get in the way of them getting together. This was an average story. It seemed to lack more strength of character. For ever step taken forward, there were two taken back. The characters were bland and the plot seemed to be too flimsy. Not a bad book, but one that you could skip.

Review: Right from the start this manga had me hooked. How can you not like Tohru? She has to be one of the sweetest people on the planet. All the hopes of breaking the Sohma curse fall on her head. It was interesting to see the relationships grow and change throughout this series. Not only are the characters great, but the storylines were fantastic, although somewhat depressing at times. This is the one series that everyone should read. It was outstanding.

Review: To start off, Alex and Lily dislike one another. It has been said there is a fine line between love and hate... that would be the same with these two. They are bitter rivals from the beginning. Lily shocks Alex with her outlandish behavior and with her determination to save her sister from an unwanted marriage. It is obvious to everyone that Lily and Alex are perfect for one another, it just takes them many pages and exposition to find that out for themselves. For the most part, I enjoyed this story. The characters were well made and enjoyable (or not). However, I found the story to be somewhat repetitive and not very creative. Its not a bad read, but there are far better novels by Kleypas out there.

Review: This book starts of with a bang (quite literally). Vincent and Cassandra are instantly besotted with each other. For Vincent this is just one night, but something happens that connects him with Cassandra forever. A year later, Cassandra brings their daughter to his home for him to care for as she thinks that she is going to die. Vincent reluctantly agrees to care for their child, but then when she discovers that she is not as ill as she though, she tries to leave with their daughter. Vincent has other things in mind. Eventually, they become friends and then lovers once more. The book is average. The story was somewhat bland and the characters were even worse. Often I was left wondering why Vincent and Cassandra were even drawn together. The side characters were worse. There were too many gaps in the story. I realize belatedly that this is part of a series, but even so there is too much missing. It wasn't a bad book, but one that I would definitely say to check out at your local library.

Review: This Discworld novel for young adults continues the story of the young Tiffany Aching. She is now a witches apprentice and on her way to a great adventure. While watching the dance, she gets caught up in the rhythm and jumps in. Because of this, she unknowingly interrupted the coming summer and caught the eye of the Wintersmith. Her guardian witch attempts to shield her from his interests, but life intervenes. Throughout this adventure, Tiffany learns many lessons about life and grows up even more. This is a really fun read. Pratchett has such a great wit. A laugh out loud adventure that everyone should read.

A side note, if you haven't read any of the previous novels (two in total), you still can enjoy this book.

Review: We enter a fantastical world where witches and wizards are part of everyday life. In this world is Sophie, who gets caught up in a duel between the Witch of the Waste and the King, as well as the Wizard Howl himself. This was a fun fantasy novel filled with twists and turns. It kept my imagination going and I couldn't wait to read more. A great book, especially for the young adults.

Movie Connection: In 2004, famed director Hayao Miyazakai brought this book to the big screen and it became one of the highest grossing Japanese film in history. It really is a great movie and should be on your "to see" list if you haven't seen it already.

Review: From the beginning, its obvious that Lara and Hunter did not have a good marriage. He was heartless and uncaring and she was unattached. When she discovers that he perished in an accident at sea, she is more than happy to give the title away to someone else and live out her days as a widow. However, that was not too last. Suddenly, a man claiming to be her husband has returned and is more than willing to return to his marriage and especially marriage bed. However, Lara has other plans. She got a taste of freedom and often encourages Hunter to seek out other women. For the most part, I disliked this novel. The story was not that great and the characters even worse. There is nothing to like about Lara. She is cold, cruel, and selfish throughout most of the book. I think Kleypas was trying to redeem her by making her so interested in the orphanage. However, I think that made things worse. Lara appeared to be nothing but supervicial. I would recommend skipping this book. Most definitely not one of Kleypas' best works.

Even though they have just met, there is an instant attraction between them. They also do more than plan lessons in her office. Although Madeline hides much from Anthony, he keeps coming back for more. I really felt bad for him. Not only did he have a bad childhood, but then the woman he loves ends up using him for her own ends. For the most part I liked the characters, I just felt that Madeline was a bit annoying. Overall, not a bad read. I would definitely recommend it if you have started the School for Heiresses series.

Nick decides to save Charlotte from her fate and as a result ends up saving himself. This final installment of the Bow Street series does not disappoint. From the begiing sparks fly between Nick and Charlotte. Many of the characters from the previous books are seen, even if only a slight glimpse. The story was good and it was a nice way to end these books. Another great read from Kleypas.

It was an interesting to see a match between someone from the aristocracy to a lower class person who rose to a high position. The characters were well made. I didn't really care for Holly's in-laws. They were overbearing and tried to manage her. Also, how she always made George out to be this perfect man really made me ill. No one is perfect... no one. Overall, a nice story that you can enjoy.

Review: Sara and Derek come from very different worlds. One chance encounter will connect them forever. Even though Sara is from the country and well-bred she has a wild side. That is where Derek comes in to play. He is the one person who can fulfill all of her dangerous fantasies. It was most interesting to see this very bad boy fall for the very proper country maid. The love they felt for each other came off every page. Another great page turner.

Review: Both Evie and Sebastian needed something... she needed protection only a husband could give her and Sebastian needed her money. What a match. From the beginning Evie was able to see that there was more to Sebastian than his reputation. Soon, Sebastian was able to see past the overly shyness of Evie and see that she was indeed quite a woman. I really love these Wallflower books. The characters are well written and the story is engrossing. This is most definitely a page turner and a must read.

Review: The premise behind this book is somewhat odd. The main characters were married when they were children. Now they don't want have anything to do with each other. In order to hide from her "husband" Julia becomes an actress under an assumed name. Ironically she meets the man she loathes... her husband, only to realize that he isn't so bad. For the most part I enjoyed this tale, but towards the end I began to get so frustrated with Julia that I wanted to slap her. Not a bad read.

I was on the edge of my chair to see what would happen between them. I would most definitely recommend this book.

Review: From the way Sophia tried to secure her job with Sir Ross it was obvious that she was there for an alternative reason. Even though it was known that Sir Ross had loved his wife and wasn't really interested in women, he was instantly attracted to Sophia. After reading Someone to Watch Over Me I was glad to get a better look at Sir Ross. He is an interesting character and his interaction with Sophia was lovely. Its obvious that they have great chemistry together and the sparks flew off the pages. A must read.

Review: An almost tragic tale of love lost. It was obvious that Aline and McKenna should have been together from the beginning; however, she was from the aristocracy and he most definitely was not. Lies were told and hearts were broken. It was nerve wracking to see if these two would get over the past and get together. The love story was well written and scorching. A definte page turner.

Review: From the beginning there was an attraction between the main characters. It also appears they have more in common than they thought. They are both heading towards the same destination and both have a "special" ability. I enjoyed the banter between them as the dialogue was rather saucy. The one thing that annoyed me was Moira's obsession that she couldn't be together with Tavig because of their abilities. It was getting tiresome by the end. Overall a nice quick read.

Review: From the beginning it appears that Amelia and Cam have great chemistry and need to end up together. I was instantly enthralled with the story of the Hathaways rise from middle class to the aristocracy. Although many of the siblings are haunted by the past they come out of this story unscathed (for the most part). I do wish we would have learned more about Cam and his past, but I have a feeling we will be learning more as the series continues on. I would definitely recommend this.

Review: A captivating mystery that begins in the present and continues on in the past. There are two storylines that go on throughout the book and the future does impact the past. For the most part, I found this to be a captivating read. Once you start reading, you don't want to stop. My one complaint is that it was difficult to figure out there were two different storylines going on. Once you get the pace of the novel, it becomes interesting. The characters were great and well developed. I would definitely read this again.

Review: A most interesting take on the Cinderella story, albeit a somewhat depressing one. From birth, Bella is despised by her somewhat mad father and sent to live with the wet nurse. Here, she is well below her station, but loved as one of their own children. Later, Bella is ripped from the family she knows and loves to her father's cold home. She learns her childhood friend, the prince, is in trouble and has to ride to his rescue. There are some deviations from the classic story, however, they were most interesting. Stanley also gives great lessons in the book. That love and loyalty are very important. This was a delightful read and definitely worth a look.

Review: Iain made it clear that he didn't want to wed and had a fear of children as his first wife died in childbirth. However, he was more or less forced into a marriage with Islaen (although there was an instant attraction). As you get farther in the story things get taken a bit far. We are hit over the head with Iain's fear and Islaen's defiance of it. Also, the fact that Iain almost goes to bed with a past flame and then sees her instead of his own wife whom he claims to love while she takes care of the kids. It had its good moments, but overall not one of Howell's better books. You could skip it and not really miss anything.

Review: It is a good thing that I read the second book first. If I would have read this to begin with, I probably would have given up on this series. I was so frustrated while reading this book. The character of Elizabeth just irritated me to no end. She just kept blathering on about how great Sir John's brother was to his face. I had to force myself to finish this one. Needless to say, I really don't give it many high points. The characters of Lady Elizabeth and Sir John just annoyed me. I would pass this one up.

Review: When two people used to commanding others come together, sparks will fly. I really did enjoy this book. It was fun to see the sparks fly between Gareth and Clare. Although, many times the character of Clare was somewhat annoying. As usual, there was much humor and some suspense. All in all, a fun book that you should check out.

Review: I can sum this book up in one word... steamy. Whew. Whenever Anne and Philip are in a room together, the sparks fly. Its obvious to everyone around them that they have something together. They just have to get over their own misgivings and misconceptions. Latham did a good job with the historical aspects of the novel. My only real problem was some of the verbiage used. It seemed out of place. Other than that, it was a fun novel and a great read.

Review: This really was quite a fantastic novel. I did not put it down once I started to read it. We follow Steven "Steel" Trapp on his way to a National Science Competition and see all the trouble he gets in. Both his curiosity and photographic memory get him stuck smack dab in the middle of a government investigation and terrorist plot. The characters were well written and very believable. I think this is a great book for mystery lovers as well as that reluctant reader in your life.

Review: We are reunited with some familiar faces in this next installment of the Arcane Society books. This time, we learn a bit more about Thaddeus, a cousin to the master of the Arcane Society (who we met in Second Sight). I really did enjoy this read, I just wish we got to learn more about our characters. Unfortunately, there was not much character development and we had to take a few things on faith. The mystery about the theft of the crystal was interesting, but the end left me somewhat unsatisfied. Not one of Quick's best, but still enjoyable.

Review: One mistaken look caused a lot of pain for both Lucas and Katerina. We spend much of the story waiting for Lucas to figure out the truth and then wait for Katerina to stop being bull-headed. A great match these two make. For the most part, I enjoyed the book. However, it seemed to take them forever to work their problems out. There was a lot of action and it made the story go by fast. All in all, not a bad read.

Not to mention Keira's most interesting healing ability that leaves her ravenous after using it. The only thing that really irritated me (besides the wordiness) was Keira's utter lack of trust in Liam. It really was wearing me thin. Not one of Howell's best, but not a bad read.

Review: A promise of a most intriguing story; however, it falls short. I was intrigued with the most graphic beginning of the torture of a Templar. Not long after that my attention sort of left. A great beginning, a not so great middle, and an okay end. If you like Da Vinci Code type books, you will like this one. I think if some of the middle was taken out, it would have been more enjoyable. Not a bad read, but a bit wordy.

Review: This had a most interesting premise, but I somehow feel shortchanged. I was excited to get my hands on it after reading a review of it in Publisher's Weekly. After reading it, I have mixed feelings. While I like the overall story, there was almost a creepy feel to it. Some of the sexual content is a bit bizarre to say the least. Even with all of that, I still liked the main story enough to want to continue on with the trilogy. I would caution readers in saying that if you are a bit squeamish when it comes to literary sex, you may want to avoid this tome. All in all, not bad, but some of that sexual content could have been eliminated.

Review: Another interesting installment to the Hellsing tale. The story gets more bizarre as time goes on. I am intrigued to see where the rest of the story will go. The artwork is interesting, but sometimes difficult to follow. All in all, a most different tale that you should read.

Indeed, upon first glance, Mr. Hardesty had such a formidable, thrilling presence, he quickly became the model or the villain in the sensation novel I was currently writing.

Imagine my shock and distress then, when Mr. Hardesty accused me of being party to a plot of murder, blackmail, and general villainy! I knew nothing of such occurrences, and proclaimed by innocence. Unfortunately, Mr. Hardesty left unconvinced, and I had an uneasy feeling over what his search would uncover. You see, Gentle Reader, though I have a most uneventful life now, my past contained a Great Scandal that would be ruinous if resurrected. To protect my secrets from Mr. Hrdesty's investigation, I concluded that I would need to conduct an inquiry of my own, and if that meant sharing my findings with Mr. Hardesty, so be it. And my course of action had nothing whatsoever to do with the illicit, passionate feelings that he aroused in me - feelings that propriety would definitely from upon...

Review: Another story about a woman with a dark secret in her past and a dark stranger on her door. I have to admit this book really made me laugh. Poor Mr. Hardesty being so concerned by being turned in the villain of Caroline Fordyce's sensation novel. Although, not one of Quick's best work, it was fun to read.

Review: A mysterious woman alone wielding knives is a most interesting start to the book. I found this to be a most enjoyable read. It made me laugh many times and I really couldn't put it down. For the most part, I liked most of the characters. Although there were times when Ewan drove me crazy with his strange ideas. All in all, a fun read that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Review: Ah, those fiery Camerons. I think they are my favorite family in the Howell universe. This was a fun read, although not my favorite Howell story. Poor Ilsa had to really overcome a lot to hang on to her man. Diarmot was pretty much an ass throughout the book, but it wasn't all his fault. I think I liked learning more about Ilsa's brother Sigimore the most of this entire story. I wouldn't read this one unless you want to have a nice introduction to the Camerons.

Review: This is one of Howell's more disturbing tales. I was finally glad to have a story revolve around the dreamy Sir Payton. This was not was I was expecting at all. The characters were most interesting, but the background story was just too much for me I confess. Also, the fact that Kirstie could not get over that Payton would really like/love her because he was so good looking was begiing to drive me crazy. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book due to the background story. It is not something everyone really wants to read about.

Review: This has it all. A manly man, a heroic woman, and romance. I really enjoyed this story. I have always loved the tartness of Gillyanne and was glad to see her have a most interesting story. Although, there were many times I wanted to smack Connor, the overall story was great. It was nice to see that she was able to show him the error of his ways and work her way into his heart. This is a story that you can read over and over again and find more to like about it.

Review: This story was sort of hard for me to get through. At the age of 9, Elspeth falls madly in love with Cormac and knows that they will be together. I remember myself at age 9 and that was pretty much the last thing on my mind. Then, ten years later they happen to be at the same place where he is able to rescue her. At first it sounds like a nice little love story. Then you have to fight through the hundreds of pages where Cormac is the biggest idiot on the planet. He annoyed me so many times I had to put the book down. This was not one of Howell's best and I would not really recommend you read it unless you really want to know more about Elspeth and Cormac and are a Howell fan.

Review: A somewhat strange historical romance/fantasy. The story was interesting and very much bathed in faerie lore. I didn't really know that it had so much to do with faeries and when I started to read it, I was a bit confused. The characters were interesting, but not really fleshed out too much. The romance was a bit fast, but in the end it turned out not too bad. I would only recommend this to people who don't mind fantasy and/or a whole lot of faeries in their romance.

Review: This really is a cute little romantic comedy that is similar to Bridget Jones' Diary. The characters are very interesting and well written. The only real problem I had was with the character of Sam. She could be a nice person, but the way she dealt with Ben made me so frustrated. He was such a cute, lovable guy and she treated him poorly. I was glad for the cute little movie ending. It did put a smile on my face. If you are looking for a nice light read, this is really a best bet.

This was really a great story. The artwork was just fabulous. I have been pleased with the literary fusing with Marvel as of late. Everything they have been producing has been outstanding. This story was really interesting and I can't wait to read more!

Review: How can a man ignore a beauty in distress? While assisting the beautiful Bethia, Eric found himself a woman to love. For the most part I enjoyed this novel. The only real complaint was the character of Bethia. She annoyed me to no end. There were many times I really wanted to slap her. I know some people can be insecure, but it was taken a bit too far with her character. All in all, not a bad read.

I really had to fight hard to finish this tale. I think part of my problem was the constant lying of Maldie throughout the entire story. It got old... fast. I would say to skip this story, but it does lay the foundation for the series and for that alone you may need to grin and bear it.

Review: Trying to flee what he feels is unrequited love, Nigel finds himself in France and then helping the beautiful Gisele. This is a somewhat dark story that ends up having a good ending. Although it was a bit creepy that Nigel does end up with a woman who looks like a sister of his brother's wife (who he thought he was in love with). Do not let the darkness of the underlying story pull you away. This really is a great read worthy of a look.

Review: This book came into my view as I was checking it in at the library. Now that I've read it, I think it might have been better to leave this one behind. The story and characters were fairly cheesy. Not only that, but the whole feel of the novel was far too modern. It was obvious the author was trying to write a historical novel without referencing much history. I didn't realize it at the time but this is part of a series. So unless you are a die hard Sherilyn Kenyon fan (who is Kinsley MacGregor by the way), I would pass this up.

Review: After reading a scathing review on Amazon I absolutely had to pick up this novel. I was pleasantly surprised by it. The story surrounds the haunted Alexander MacDubh and the spirited Ailis. A sort of Romeo and Juliet story, but one with a much happier ending. I thought the characters were really well written and believable. A really great story that you can read over and over.

Baxter is involved in the same mystery, but is actually investigating Charlotte's involvement in the matter. These similar people are brought together by strange circumstances and raving madmen are determined to bring them apart. The characters were not what I have come to expect from Quick. I was bored with some of the novel and felt like skimming much of it. Not one of her best, so I would skip it.

Review: Pirates, family legends, and treasure. What more can you ask for? Jared and Olivia are a cute couple. They both are alone in the world and understand each other. It is great to see that they get together early on as it is obvious they do belong together. Quick gives us another fun romp with the interesting Flamecrest family and their search for lost treasure. A really great read.

Review: From the start, sparks fly between Hugh and Alice. They are both too smart for their own good, but will their brains get in between their hearts? Another story that involves family stories and their aftermaths. The mystery surrounding the deaths of Hugh's parents and the green stone is interesting. The characters were really great and I enjoyed following both Hugh and Alice on their road of discovery. This is definitely worth another read.

Review: Impressions play a large part of this novel. What one person sees or hears can be much different than what the truth really is. It also is a novel about how truly dysfunctional families can be and their aftermath. A most interesting read.

Courageously, passionately, she gives him freely what he vows to take - her body and her heart, knowing that she can lose all on the chance of everlasting love...

Review: Fate has brought these two together, but can they stay together? Due to his sister's lies, Cameron believes it is his right to dishonor Avery to avenge her supposed honor. This plan goes awry (as often happens in Howell's novels) and it becomes more seduction than anything else. Many truths are discovered along with love. This was a good read that leaves the reader satisfied.

Review: This novel is a story of temptation and how hard it is to not surrender to that temptation. The characters were well written and I really did like most of them. There were some moments when I wanted to slap Victoria, but all in all a good read. Definitely worth a second read.

Review: A story about the truth and how different versions of it can cause so much pain. From the beginning, it was assumed that Julian was some kind of monster, but it turns out he really isn't too bad. The mystery surrounding Sophy's sister's death was most interesting. A captivating read from the beginning. This is one of those stories you will want to read more than once.

Review: When Dominic St. Bride comes to Ravenwood manor, it begins a most interesting story. From the beginning, we see how much the gypsies (Romany) people are mistrusted due to how different they are. That prejudice sets the tone for the entire novel and it plays an important role in how the main characters interact. James created some interesting characters and some rather annoying ones. The blind sister Emily drove me crazy. She was a constant irritant throughout the story. Overall, a nice little love story about how love conquers all.

Review: I hate to say it, but this series continues to be nothing but a superficial look at the upper class that has to do with vampires. At times, it is a little creepy. The relationship between Jack and Mimi just leaves me feeling uneasy most of the time. I was interested to see where we will be lead, but at times I found the story to be tedious. We are left with a cliffhanger at the end, but if you read carefully enough, it really isn't that shocking.

Review: This was a most interesting manga. First of all, it was set in Australia in the bush. Not only is the location different from most manga, but the story too was different. It was eerie, but vastly fascinating. Basically, the story revolves around mysterious disappearances at a boarding school in the middle of nowhere. I did guess some elements, but I really am most interested to see where this story goes.

Review: I have mixed feelings about this story. I did enjoy the overall story and the characters, just some things were a bit strange. The way Botolf and Saxon got together seemed forced and almost rushed. It seemed a bit strange to me. I think what was even more bizarre was the youngest sister. Perhaps if she was aged somewhat older I would have believed what her character was to be, but I think Howell went a bit too far with her. Overall, not a bad story, just not one of Howell's best.

I could not put it down and had to keep reading until it was done. This book is one of those you will want to read over and over.

Review: This was not one of Howells better novels. I had a difficult time actually getting through this tale. Once again, we begin in a dungeon. It didn't' get much better from there. I really didn't care for the characters and just couldn't wait to get the story done. If you pass this one up, you really aren't missing much.

Review: This was a most fun novel. I really loved the character of Artan Murray. The rest of the characters were well formed as well. The only real problem I had with the book was the character of Cecily. She was doing well up till the end when she reverted back to her original self. It didn't seem like she really would do that and just seemed like Howell needed another reason for conflict. I really could have done without it. Overall, this was an enjoyable read and I recommend it.

Review: Another Howell romance that starts in the dungeons. This time we really have an interesting mix of characters. A most loyal, but secretive Scottish knight and a half-Spanish, half-Scot heroine. I really did like the characters, but Revan was starting to annoy me with his lofty opinions of marriage (they were not normal for the time). All in all, it was a fun read.

Review: From the very beginning of this story I was absolutely captivated. We start of with a prison break and the action never stops. Another interesting aspect to this book are the relationships between the English and the Scots. Not many of Howell's books have them mix quite so nice. The character development was great and the story kept me turning the pages. A really great read.

Review: Most definitely a fun read. I really enjoyed the characters of Marcus and Iphiginia. It was most interesting to see where the story was going to go and what they were going to do next. Like always, Quick does a great job with her research and makes a really believable story. I really enjoyed it and think you will too.
